The Butcher is Alive and Well

One of my favorite things to do when I am in Brooklyn, is to shop at Staubitz Market in Cobble Hill. I mean, this place is like a step back in time. The old-fashioned counter, the sawdust strewn on the wood floors- you get the picture. It's history dates back to 1917, when it was started as a butcher shop by John Staubitz.

As all things do change, the market now belongs to the McFadden family and has for over 40 years, and the father and son team can be found most days right behind the counter with smiles on their faces and always helpful in making you feel right at home. The old time feel is still intack however, they also have a wonderful selection of cheeses and specialty items- this great spelt pasta from Italy ( which I had to get on this trip!) as well as many other delicious offerings- like Amy's bread (the semolina raisin is my fave!). A great mix of the old and new to say the least.

So if you are ever wandering down Court Street in Cobble Hill, stop in check it out, and tell 'em I sent you!

  2. They are few and far between too! It's almost considered a lost art!

  3. Butchers are so few and far between. I wish we had an old fashioned butcher in Ithaca. We get good meat from Wegman's, but there is nothing like frequenting a butcher shop. I really did think that every time you said the name you were slurring the word "Starbuck's"!
